V roce 1964 se stal jeho historicky nejmlad\u0161\u00edm v\u00edt\u011bzem, kdy\u017e v tomto ro\u010dn\u00edku vyhr\u00e1l 3 etapy. Celkov\u011b vyhr\u00e1l 6 etap a 20 etap Z\u00e1vodu m\u00edru odjel ve \u017elut\u00e9m trikotu l\u00eddra, startoval tak\u00e9 na LOH v Tokiu a Mexiku.
