The king of cycling

The King of Cycling is a survey of the best Czech (in the years 1965–1992 Czechoslovakian) cyclist, which is announced annually by the Czech Cycling Federation in cooperation with sports journalists. The survey has been held since 1965. Cyclists declared their king as the first in our country, other sports were added later. The first ever winner was road cyclist Pavel Doležel, who won silver at the Peace Race. The royal crown was made by the international indoor cycling referee Jaroslav Fafek at his workplace in the goldsmith’s team of Thessaloniki. In 2020, this crown was replaced by a new, more modern variant, which was designed by Julie Koh from SŠUD Brno as part of the competition. The most successful cyclists in the history of the survey are the Pospíšil brothers, who won eight times, followed by Ján Svorada, a six-time winner. Roman Kreuziger won five times, in the longest span (2004–2018). Jaroslav Kulhavý dominated the survey a total of four times. In 2019, Romana Labounková, world champion in fourcross, won, becoming only the second female winner in the history of the competition; Lada Kozlíková was the first to sit on the throne in 2002. In 2023 was crowned other lady, Iveta Miculyčová, BMX Freestyle European champion from 2022.

In addition to the King himself, the best athletes of individual disciplines – road cycling, track cycling, MTB (mountain bikes), BMX, cyclocross and indoor cycling, as well as the best para cyclists – are announced.

Every year, the best Junior man and Junior woman of the year are also awarded across all disciplines. Last but not least, cycling personalities are regularly inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Czech Cycling Federation.
